Central America: Climate & Best Time to Visit
Central America is mostly tropical to subtropical and warm. Rather than four distinct seasons, travel is shaped mainly by dry and rainy periods; coasts, altitude and islands can differ considerably. This guide is for orientation, as hurricanes, heavy rain and local microclimates can change conditions.

As a broad guide, the dry season usually runs from December to April, while the rainy season is generally from May to October or November. The rainy season often brings afternoon showers, with September and October frequently the wettest months. The Caribbean side of many countries is usually wetter and can follow a different rainfall pattern.
Belize
Climate: Tropical, warm and humid, with a distinct rainy season. Hurricanes can be relevant, especially in the second half of the year.
Best time to visit: December to May for relatively dry weather and good conditions for beaches, diving and touring. June to November is significantly wetter.
Costa Rica
Climate: Tropical, with major differences between the Pacific, Caribbean, central highlands and rainforest. The dry season is usually clearer on the Pacific coast.
Best time to visit: December to April for the Pacific coast and interior; February/March are often favourable for the Caribbean coast. The May-to-November rainy season is lush but wetter.
El Salvador
Climate: Tropical and warm, with a hot coast and cooler highlands. The rainy season usually falls between May and October.
Best time to visit: November to April for drier conditions, beach holidays and touring. April and May can be particularly hot.
Guatemala
Climate: Large altitude differences create tropical, humid lowlands and Pacific coast conditions alongside temperate highlands. The rainy season is usually from May to October.
Best time to visit: November to April for drier conditions, highlands, cultural sites and volcano hikes. Caribbean areas can follow different rainfall patterns.
Honduras
Climate: Tropical, and very humid on the Caribbean coast; highland areas are more temperate. Hurricanes and heavy rain can affect travel seasonally.
Best time to visit: November to April for many regions and the Caribbean Bay Islands; the rainy season is usually from May to October or November.
Nicaragua
Climate: Tropical, with a drier Pacific side, wetter Caribbean coast and milder highlands. The rainy season often brings daily showers.
Best time to visit: November to April for drier weather, beaches, volcanoes and touring. The Caribbean coast remains much wetter and can have a different rainy-season pattern.
Panama
Climate: Tropical and warm year-round, with a humid Caribbean side and a much drier Pacific period. Rain is possible even in the dry season.
Best time to visit: December to April for most tours and the Pacific side; February and March are often among the driest months. May to November is the greener, wetter season.
