The best time to visit South America depends strongly on the region: the Andes, Amazon, coast, desert and Patagonia follow different weather patterns. This guide is for orientation; weather extremes, El Niño/La Niña and local microclimates can change conditions.

In the Southern Hemisphere, summer is generally from December to February and winter from June to August. For Andean countries, the drier period from around May to October is often preferable; Patagonia is usually best in the southern summer. Tropical areas can be visited year-round but have distinct rainy seasons.
Argentina
Climate: From subtropical in the north to cool and windy in Patagonia; seasons are opposite to Europe.
Best time to visit: October to April for many regions; November to March for Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. Spring or autumn is often more comfortable for Buenos Aires and the north.
Bolivia
Climate: Cool nights in the Andean highlands, tropical lowlands and rainforest; the highlands are generally wetter from December to March.
Best time to visit: May to October for drier highland conditions and many tours; April to October is often favourable for the Amazon and lowlands.
Brazil
Climate: Mostly tropical to subtropical, with major differences between the Amazon, northeast, southeast and south.
Best time to visit: May to September often suits multi-region trips; September to March is often good for northeast beaches. The Amazon is humid year-round but often less rainy from around June to November.
Chile
Climate: Exceptional north-south range: dry Atacama, Mediterranean central Chile, rainy lake district and cool Patagonia.
Best time to visit: October to April for central Chile; November to March for Patagonia and the lake district. The Atacama Desert can generally be visited year-round.
Colombia
Climate: Tropical, but strongly shaped by altitude; coast, Andes and rainforest have different rainfall patterns.
Best time to visit: December to March and July/August are often drier periods; plan coast and mountain regions separately.
Ecuador
Climate: Coast, Andes, Amazon and Galápagos differ greatly; temperatures fluctuate less across the year near the Equator.
Best time to visit: June to September often suits the Andean highlands. Galápagos is year-round: water is generally warmer from January to May, while June to November is cooler and often rich in wildlife.
Guyana
Climate: Hot and humid year-round, with more than one rainy season that can affect roads, rivers and nature travel.
Best time to visit: February to April or September to November are often relatively drier. Keep rainforest itineraries flexible for weather and logistics.
Paraguay
Climate: Subtropical to tropical, with hot summers and milder, drier winters; the Chaco can be extremely hot and dry.
Best time to visit: May to September for more comfortable temperatures and often drier conditions. Midsummer can be very hot and humid.
Peru
Climate: Desert coast, Andes and Amazon have opposite seasonal patterns; the southern summer is generally wetter in the highlands.
Best time to visit: May to September for the Andes and Machu Picchu region; December to April is warmer on the coast; May to October is often somewhat drier in the Amazon.
Suriname
Climate: Equatorial, tropical, warm and humid year-round, with wetter and relatively drier periods.
Best time to visit: February to April or August to November often offer relatively drier conditions. Plan rain, river levels and onward travel for the interior.
Uruguay
Climate: Temperate-subtropical with possible year-round weather changes; summers are warm to hot, winters cool and wetter.
Best time to visit: December to March for beaches and coast; spring and autumn often offer milder conditions for cities and touring.
Venezuela
Climate: Tropical with regional altitude differences; many areas have a rainy season roughly from May to November and drier months from December to April.
